Paint or Replace? Siding, Trim, Cabinets and Decks Around Stamford

When to paint and when to replace cedar shingles, clapboard, trim, cabinets and decks in Stamford, CT: rot, salt air, chalky aluminum, with national costs.

Paint protects material that is still sound. It cannot save rotten trim, loose shingles or failed siding. This page helps you tell which one you have, with salt air, humid summers and winter freeze and thaw in mind.

Every dollar figure on this page is a national number published by HomeGuide for 2026. None of them is a quote from The Stamford Painters. Labor rates, paint costs and the state of your own walls and siding shift the real price. We last checked these figures in October 2026.

Should I paint or replace my kitchen cabinets?

Paint your kitchen cabinets when the boxes are solid, the doors sit flat and the layout suits you. Replace them when the boxes have swollen from leaks, shelves sag or the layout does not work. HomeGuide's national figures put painting at $2,000 to $6,500 and full replacement at $4,500 to $15,000.

Is it cheaper to paint or replace old siding?

Painting siding is cheaper than replacing it, as long as the siding is sound. By HomeGuide's figures, vinyl costs $1,500 to $5,000 to paint and $4,800 to $11,100 to replace. Aluminum costs $1,500 to $7,000 to paint and $6,300 to $20,100 to replace.

HomeGuide publishes no such comparison for wood, cedar shingle, stucco or brick. Paint only saves money if it lasts. On rotten or loose siding it fails quickly, and then you pay twice.

My wood siding is 30 years old, faded and cracked. Paint or replace?

If the boards are still solid, painting is the right call. Fading and fine surface cracks on old wood siding are ordinary wear that prep and primer can handle. Replace boards or shingles that are soft, cupped, split through or loose.

Press a screwdriver into the lower edges and the butt ends. If the blade will not sink in, the wood is fit for paint. On cedar shingle houses near the water, look at the shingles just above the ground and under the windows, where water sits longest. Split or missing shingles are swapped out before the house is painted.

My wood siding has some rot. Do I paint it or replace it first?

Replace the rotted wood first, then paint. Paint does not stop rot. It only covers it for a season while the decay spreads behind the film.

Find out why the wood stayed wet. The usual causes here are a clogged gutter, a downspout dumping against the wall, shrubs touching the siding, sprinklers, or open joints around windows. Larger siding replacement can need a building permit in your town, so ask before boards come off.

The trim is rotting or soft. Fill and paint, or new trim?

A small soft spot in trim can be cut out, treated with a wood hardener, filled and painted. Replace trim that is soft along much of its length or rotted right through. Window sills, the bottoms of door casings, porch posts and the ends of fascia boards go first.

Can a painter patch dry rot with epoxy or do I need a carpenter?

A painter can repair small areas of rot with two-part epoxy filler, once the soft wood is cut out and the rest is dry. You need a carpenter when the rot is in a structural member, covers a wide area, or reaches into a window frame or sill plate.

Epoxy holds when the wood around it is dry and sound. We tell you which repairs fit within the paint job and which need a carpenter first.

My deck boards are grey and splintering. Stain or replace?

Grey boards can be cleaned and stained, but splintering, cupped or soft boards should be replaced. Grey is sun damage on the surface, and a wash and light sanding bring back clean wood.

Check the framing too. If the joists, posts and ledger are firm, replacing the worst boards and staining the rest is good value. If the frame is soft, stain is wasted.

My aluminum siding is chalky. Paint it or cover it?

Paint it. Chalky aluminum siding takes paint well once the chalk is washed off, and the metal usually has many years left. The chalk is the old factory coating breaking down in the sun.

Rub a hand on the wall. If it comes away white, the siding needs a thorough wash before primer and paint. Dents still show after painting, so a badly dented wall is the one case where covering or replacing makes more sense. Aluminum siding is common on older two-family houses in Stamford and Norwalk.

Is a 20-year-old deck worth painting or staining?

Staining an older deck pays off when its frame is solid and nearly all the boards are firm. Skip it if posts are rotting or boards bend and split when you walk on them.

Snow, freeze and thaw and humid summers age decks quickly here. On an old deck, solid stain hides weathered and patched boards better than semi-transparent. Our deck and fence guide covers the details.
