Painting the cabinets in an average kitchen runs $2,000 to $6,500 in 2026, by HomeGuide's national figures. No surface in a house gets touched more often, so the prep and the enamel matter more here than on any wall.
Every dollar figure on this page is a national number published by HomeGuide for 2026. None of them is a quote from The Stamford Painters. Labor rates, paint costs and the state of your own walls and siding shift the real price. We last checked these figures in October 2026.
How much does it cost to paint kitchen cabinets?
HomeGuide's national cost to paint kitchen cabinets is $2,000 to $6,500 for an average kitchen. It also lists $30 to $70 per linear foot, $120 to $190 per cabinet and $3 to $15 per square foot. Spraying runs $40 to $100 per linear foot.
| Kitchen size | National range |
|---|---|
| Small, 70 to 100 sq ft | $1,000 to $3,500 |
| Average, 100 to 200 sq ft | $2,000 to $6,500 |
| Large, over 200 sq ft | $5,000 to $10,000 |
Of that total, HomeGuide puts labor at $1,600 to $5,500 and materials at $400 to $1,000. Some of its other pages show lower cabinet figures, such as $900 to $3,800. We quote the cabinet page here because it covers this exact job.
How much for 20 or 30 cabinet doors and drawers?
HomeGuide's national figure is $70 to $125 per door and $30 to $110 per drawer front. So 20 cabinet doors work out to $1,400 to $2,500, and 30 cabinet doors to $2,100 to $3,750. Add ten drawer fronts and the figure rises by $300 to $1,100.
Those totals are arithmetic on published per-piece prices, not our quote. The boxes, end panels, crown and toe kicks are part of the work as well, and we count every piece when we measure.
Is it cheaper to paint, reface or replace cabinets?
Of the three, paint costs the least. HomeGuide lists painting at $2,000 to $6,500, refacing at $5,000 to $13,000 and full replacement at $4,500 to $15,000. New doors alone run $2,200 to $6,600.
Refacing puts new doors and a veneer skin on the old boxes. Replacement gives you new boxes and the chance to change the layout. Paint changes only the color, so it is the right call when the boxes are sound and the layout already works.
Painting or refinishing cabinets: what is the difference in cost?
Refinishing is listed slightly below painting: $1,500 to $4,500 against $2,000 to $6,500, by HomeGuide's figures. Refinishing strips or sands the old clear coat and puts on new stain and finish, so the wood grain still shows.
Paint covers the grain with solid color. Refinish if you like the wood and it is in good condition. Paint if you want a new color or the wood is worn and patchy.
Are 1990s oak cabinets worth painting, and can oak go white?
Yes on both counts, as long as the boxes are solid. Oak kitchens from the 1980s and 1990s are common in colonials around Stamford, Norwalk and Wilton. Most were built well and take paint well.
Oak has open grain, and the grain still shows through white paint as fine lines unless it is filled before priming. Some owners like that texture and some want it gone, so decide first. Oak also holds tannins that can stain white paint, so it needs a stain-blocking primer.
Can you paint laminate or thermofoil cabinets?
Laminate can be painted when it is firmly bonded, using a primer made to grip slick surfaces. Thermofoil is a gamble. It is a thin vinyl skin, and once it starts to bubble or lift near the oven or dishwasher, paint will not hold it down.
Thermofoil doors that are peeling are better replaced, and the boxes can then be painted to match. Laminate and thermofoil are common in condo kitchens downtown, so we check each door before we suggest a plan.
Spray or brush for cabinets, and are doors sprayed off site?
Spraying gives cabinet doors the smoothest finish, while brushing and rolling suit the fixed boxes in a working kitchen. A common approach is to remove the doors and drawer fronts, spray them flat, and paint the boxes in place.
Whether doors are sprayed off site or in a masked area at your home depends on the painter and the space. Ask where your doors will be and how they will be protected. Ask us and we will explain the plan for your kitchen.
Can cabinets be painted without removing the doors?
It can be done, but the finish suffers. With the doors off, the edges and hinge side get painted, the hinges stay clean and nothing drips at the hinge line. With the doors on, you get bare strips and paint on the hardware.
We take the doors and drawer fronts off and number each one so it returns to the same opening.
How long does cabinet painting take and can I use the kitchen?
HomeGuide gives 3 to 5 days for cabinet painting as a national figure, and you can use the kitchen through most of it. The sink, counters and appliances stay in place. You are without doors for a few days, and the boxes are masked off while they are painted.
In a humid Stamford summer the enamel takes longer to set, so the schedule may stretch. The finish is dry in hours but stays soft for a few weeks, so go easy on it at first.
Will painted cabinets chip or peel?
Expect a few chips on edges that get heavy use, but peeling is a sign something went wrong. Peeling means the paint never stuck. The usual reasons are grease left on the surface, no sanding and no primer.
Every surface is degreased, sanded dull and primed before the enamel goes on. Small chips near pulls and the trash drawer can be touched up.
How long does cabinet paint last, compared with a factory finish?
HomeGuide puts the life of painted kitchen cabinets at 8 to 15 years. A factory finish is sprayed and cured under controlled conditions, so it is harder than any finish applied in a home. A good painted finish looks close to it but shows wear sooner on edges and corners.
What paint do pros use on cabinets for a smooth finish?
Pros use a hard enamel made for cabinets and trim, not wall paint. These enamels flow out as they dry, so brush and roller marks level off, and they cure to a hard film that handles cleaning.
We do not name a brand here, because the right product depends on the old finish and the wood. Ask any painter which primer and which enamel they will use, and why.
I painted my cabinets myself and they look bad. Can a pro fix them?
Yes, most of the time. Paint that is tacky, peeling or full of brush marks has to be sanded back or stripped to a sound surface before anything new goes on. That is more work than painting bare cabinets, so the price reflects it.
